We audit dozens of websites every month, and the same problems show up again and again. These aren't minor design preferences — they're conversion killers that directly impact your bottom line.
1. Slow Load Times
We covered this in depth in our speed optimization guide, but it bears repeating: if your website takes more than 3 seconds to load, you're losing over half your visitors before they see a single word of content.
The fix: Optimize images, minimize code, use a CDN, and choose quality hosting. Modern web development frameworks like Next.js deliver near-instant load times out of the box.
2. Not Mobile-Responsive
Over 60% of web traffic comes from mobile devices. If your site doesn't look and function perfectly on a phone, you're delivering a broken experience to the majority of your visitors.
A mobile-responsive site isn't just about shrinking the desktop layout. It means:
- Touch-friendly navigation and buttons
- Readable text without zooming
- Fast load times on cellular connections
- Easy-to-use forms
- Click-to-call phone numbers
The fix: Build mobile-first. Design for the smallest screen first, then scale up for tablets and desktops.
3. No Clear Call to Action
Every page on your website should have a clear, obvious next step for the visitor. "Contact us," "Get a quote," "Book an appointment," "Download the guide" — whatever action you want them to take, make it unmissable.
Too many websites bury their contact information in the footer or hide their phone number behind three clicks. If a visitor has to search for how to reach you, they'll find a competitor instead.
The fix: Place a prominent call-to-action above the fold on every page. Use contrasting colors, clear language, and make it easy to take action on both desktop and mobile.
4. Outdated Content and Design
Nothing kills credibility faster than a website that looks like it was built in 2015. Outdated design, old blog posts, copyright dates from three years ago — these all signal that your business isn't active or invested.
Beyond design, outdated content hurts your SEO. Google favors fresh, regularly updated content. A blog that hasn't been updated in a year tells Google your site isn't a priority.
The fix: Refresh your design every 3-4 years. Update your content regularly. Add new blog posts, update service descriptions, and keep your portfolio current.
5. No SEO Foundation
A beautiful website that nobody can find is worthless. Yet we see this constantly — businesses invest in design but completely ignore search engine optimization.
At minimum, your website needs:
- Unique title tags and meta descriptions for every page
- Header hierarchy (H1, H2, H3) with relevant keywords
- Alt text on all images
- Internal linking between related pages
- XML sitemap submitted to Google Search Console
- Schema markup for your business type
- Fast load times and mobile responsiveness (which also help SEO)
The fix: Build SEO into the website from day one. It's exponentially easier and more effective than trying to bolt it on after the fact.
The Common Thread
All five of these mistakes share a root cause: treating your website as a brochure instead of a business tool. Your website should be your hardest-working marketing asset — generating leads, building trust, and converting visitors into customers around the clock.
If any of these mistakes sound familiar, let's fix them together.
